The wine producing estate and “locanda” is located along the cliffs of the Capofaro promontory. This is where one of the finest expressions of local typical wine is produced, Malvasia delle Lipari.
Capofaro’s 27 rooms immersed in 4.5 hectares of vineyards were restored from an ancient fishing village, using white-washed Aeolian architecture and minimalist design. In the Capofaro kitchen, Sicilian cuisine meets the gastronomic traditions of the Tasca family, shaped by the best local ingredients thanks to the creative flair of chef Ludovico De Vivo. From the terraces of the rooms, overlooking the functioning lighthouse with panoramic views of sea and the islands of Stromboli and Panarea on the horizon, one is captured by true Mediterranean bliss.
The Lighthouse
Since 2017, Capofaro has been part of the Relais & Châteaux circuit and is a place for discovering luxury amidst the simplicity of beautiful things. As in all of Tasca’s projects, nature is at the forefront of this beauty and Capofaro is no exception. Everything started from the vineyards, six hectares planted to Malvasia. The best parts of the vineyards were preserved, and the buildings of the ancient fishing village were restored into what now forms the structures for the locanda. But the absolute attraction of Capofaro is the lighthouse. With its reassuring appearance and the charm of its intermittent light, this sentinel has kept watch over the sea and the Capofaro cliffs since the mid 1800s. It’s the first signal for those arriving from the Tyrrhenian Sea at night and the northernmost lighthouse in Sicily. In 2017, the Tasca family became the custodian of this precious part of island history. The evocative building, formerly the guardian’s residence, was divided into six new exclusive suites. Next door, a micro-sized “museum” dedicated to the sea – il mare – and la Malvasia gives visitors a peak at the unique history of this beacon.
Sicilian scents and flavors
Capofaro’s cuisine exalts the Sicilian aromas and flavors, balancing creative expression with great respect for tradition and a measured contemporary sensibility. Ludovico De Vivo, a chef from southern Italy, is the interpreter of the Tasca family’s passion for good food with includes their deep, rich gastronomic history, combining tradition with agricultural knowledge. Being surrounded by an ecosystem deeply connected to wine makes it the prime protagonist. The food has flavors enriched by the sun, the sea and Salina’s volcanic soil, and is prepared using techniques that preserve their essence. A system of vegetable gardens provides 70% of the produce used in the kitchen, whereas the ancient grains from Tenuta Regaleali are made into bread and pasta.
